Duke of Edinburgh Award Levels/Requirements
The Award is based around three Levels, each successive one requiring a greater degree of commitment. The six month period of participation officially BEGINS on your date of registration.
- BRONZE is for those 14 and older. The minimum period of participation to gain this Award is 6 months
- SILVER is for those 15 and older. The minimum period of participation to gain this Award is 6 months
- GOLD is for those 16 and older. The minimum period of participation to gain this Award is 12 months
- The Award may not be achieved in a shorter time span by working more intensively. Participants must persist for at least the above minimum periods.
FOUR SECTIONS
To gain an Award, participants must complete activities in four Sections – one hour weekly for each activity. Minimum periods of participation vary with each Award Level (see above). Participants choose their activity for each Section – an Activity Coach needs to verify that the participant has been making persistent and regular effort for the minimum time period required at each Award Level.
- Community Service – participants engage with their community and discover the impact they can have through service.
- Special Skills – participants develop personal interests and learn practical skills. There are almost limitless possibilities to choose from. Participants set their own goals and measure their progress.
- Physical Recreation – participants show perseverance and improve their fitness by undertaking some form of organized and regular physical activity. Most sports team and individual sports satisfy this requirement.
- Adventurous Journey – participants develop an understanding of the environment, and the importance of working together in a team with a common purpose. It can be on foot, by bicycle, boat or on horseback by learning preparation, self-sufficiency and self-reliance.
Bronze – 2 days+1 night. 6 hours of purposeful activity each day.
Silver – 3 days+2 nights. 7 hours of purposeful activity each day.
Gold – 4 days+3 nights. 8 hours of purposeful activity each day.
Residential Project – Only a requirement at Gold Level. This 5 day+4 night project aims to broaden experience through living and working with others (who are not everyday companions). The project takes place over a period of five consecutive days or two weekends. It requires resilience, adaptability and consideration for others.

A note from Miss New Hampshire 2013
Reposted with permission from Samantha's Blog: http://missnh2013.wordpress.com
New Hampshire’s Daniel Webster famously wrote about our Old Man in the Mountain: ”Men hang out their signs indicative of their respective trades; shoe makers hang out a gigantic shoe; jewelers a monster watch, and the dentist hangs out a gold tooth; but up in the Mountains of New Hampshire, God Almighty has hung out a sign to show that there He makes men.”
Our mountains make strong women too! And Outstanding Teens. This weekend I will be leading New Hampshire’s second Duke of Edinburgh Adventurous Journey into the White Mountains with an incredible group of women. I am very grateful to the Kelley Family who provide our base camp. And I can’t wait to “Go Wild” with Eileen, Miss New Hampshires Outstanding Teen 2012, before she heads off to the bright lights of New York City for college. We will power down our technology to focus on a rugged outdoor expedition over rocks and rivers. Plus campfire songs, s’mores and a special sunrise hike.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award — Young American’s Challenge was first established in 1956 in the United Kingdom and was introduced to the Miss America Program in January 2009. After completing the adventurous journey requirement I will be able to receive my bronze award on the MAO stage in September!
You’ll want to stay tuned for my recap post of that and pictures! I’m certainly not the most outdoorsy person you’ve ever met, but I know it is going to be an experience to remember! However, I KNOW that as soon as the weekend is over I will be immediately running to my computer/phone to find out who will be joining me at Miss America as Miss Rhode Island 2013 will be crowned on June 1st!
